Part 2 - Project 1 - Exercises

I made a research directly on the website https://www.magnumphotos.com/newsroom/society/w-eugene-smith-country-doctor/ (accessed 20/03/2017)

The photostory by Eugene Smith is structured in two parts: the main story is about Dr. Ceriani, then there are several substories made by a single picture, each one with different subjects involved.

Eugene Smith, a former Magnum Photos' member, made the photo essay being clearly separated by the main subject (Dr. Ernest Ceriani), his story and other people involved in it.

Smith is the "reporter", the "story teller", the "ghost in the scene" and never in the role of a subject himself.

The narrative is simple and descriptive. Each caption explains to the viewer the context of each picture.

On the contrary, Briony Campbell plays a role in the story, together with her father.

She is the daughter in the role of the daughter.

The narrative is intense, nearly cruel but, at the same time, personal, intimate: in my opinion, the main subject of "The Dad Project" is, paradoxically, the daughter Briony.

At a certain moment she decides to introduce a camera into the sad context of a family "deported" to live most of their time in a hospital. The camera is just a tool, that records what will be the visual part of this story.

Briony Campbell, daughter and photographer, records the last part (end) of her father's life, but narrative and photographs, being essential to memory, will preserve memory itself, with no end.

A story refers to an event in a definite time: it can be repeated forever and maintain 'an ending, without an ending'.
